Sony’s WH-1000XM, Best Noise Cancelling Headphones, series is generally their Flagship lineup of Active Noise Cancellation Headphones. This one is the Sony WH-1000XM5 that is latest in their land and Flagship Active Noise Cancellation headphones and it is truly considered as the best in terms of popularity. The WH-1000XM5 itself is kind of a substantial upgrade over the WH-100XM4.
Design and Build of Sony WH-1000XM5
One of the first things I noticed about this headphone is the design. The aesthetic is far more minimal and modern looking in nature and looks better than the preceding WH-1000XM4. However, there are some functionality you’d lose out as a result of the new design.
Firstly, it only folds flat, so it cannot be fold up entirely like you could on the Best Noise Cancelling Headphones. So, it means that the case is now much bigger as well and it’s a nice case no doubt. But it doesn’t fit in my slim backpack easily. There is another fundamental problem of the design is when you are not listening to music and wear your headphone around your neck, they don’t close up entirely. They don’t swivel completely flat which means that if you want them sitting around your neck you will have to change the orientation.
As a result, it’s kind of odd because when you are going to listen to music, you will have to set this and it’s not very intuitive in nature. Also, one more thing I noticed is that the accessories that are bundled with type A to type C adapter for charging and 3.5mm extension cable for when you want to listen in wired mode. But there is no airplane adapter with these headphones which is something that is very essential for any noise cancellation headphones.

Comfort of Sony WH-1000XM5
Now, let’s talk about the comfort of the Best Noise Cancelling Headphones, Sony WH-1000XM5. I am somebody who has a big head. Most headphones generally clamp around my head, but that’s not the case with the WH-1000XM5. The clamping force is not too tight and apart from that the cushioning on the ear pads and the headband itself is extremely soft.
So, I could listen to music for three hours at a stretch probably even extend to 4 hours and it didn’t cost me any fatigue at all. The lightweight design, combined with plush ear cushions, made them a joy to wear even during long flights or marathon work sessions. By the way, the headband extension that you have doesn’t have like a step counter of sort to give you sorted like a ridged mechanism. Similarly, it’s like a smooth sort of extension which works really well and I have to complaints about it.
How to Control Sony WH-1000XM5
The controls on the tablet 1000XM5 are both physical and swipe gestures in nature. So, you get two physical buttons where one for the power on a function which also you doubles up as your Bluetooth pairing mode. Similarly, you also get another button for noise cancellation or switching on to the Ambient sound mode.
As for the gestures, they’re all placed on the right ear cup and you can swipe up and down for increasing or decreasing the volume. Additionally, you can swipe forward or backward for changing the tracks. Also, the latency tuning for this is done really well and it works exceptionally well every single time.
Through the app you can control the Sony WH-1000XM5, Best Noise Cancelling Headphones. The problem with this app is that if you are somebody who cares about security and privacy then this app asks a lot of data and information from you. On the other hand, you also get multi-point connectivity and you can connect two devices to the XM5 at one time.
Sound Quality of Sony WH-1000XM5
Let’s talk about the sound quality. By default the Sony WH-1000XM5, Best Noise Cancelling Headphones, is not that great. So, I used with the LDA codec on the Pixel 7 Pro but you don’t get LDA codec support on the iPhone and it defaults to AAC. LDA codec is a high resolution codec which will work well with lossless music and will give you better Fidelity as well. So, if you are using apple music, it’ll give you great quality sound. By default the problem with the tuning is that it’s dark, kind of wailed and it is very boomy.
The sub bass rumble is way too much. Now, if you are planning on buying the WH-1000XM5 just do this one thing download the Wavelet app on your android phone and switch to this EQ which pulls down a lot of the sub bass and the mid bass as well and increases the treble too. In fact, I feel that they are better than the custom EQ that you can do within the headphones app itself. But if you do customer queuing on the headphones app, it will retain the EQ and it will work across devices. So, it will work even with iOS devices.
What sets these headphones apart from the competition is the Auto Noise Canceling Optimizer feature. This technology adapts the noise cancellation based on your environment, ensuring that you get the best listening experience no matter where you are. Whether I was on a noisy subway, in a bustling coffee shop, or simply relaxing at home, the headphones adjusted perfectly, blocking out background noise while allowing me to fully immerse myself in the music.
